INNOVATIVE CHILDCARE PROGRAM
NEW CHILDCARE FACILITIES FOR REMOTE AREA COMMUNITIES

In 2001 the Commonwealth government began $1.96m in funding for new innovative childcare centres in a variety of remote communities in Central Australia. Over the years Tangentyere Design has been involved in the design and development of four new childcare centres – one each at Mt Liebig, Ikuntji, Laramba and Titjikala Communities. In addition, Tangentyere Design has been responsible for the renovation and extensions to existing childcare centres at Mutitjulu and Yuendumu Communities. The Innovative Childcare Program involved extensive consultation with the women providing child care in the various communities as well as with the Children’s Services and Environmental Health branches of the Northern Territory Government. Community engagement was essential to developing innovative and appropriate designs that met the specific childcare needs of each community, and enhanced the sustainability of the buildings and the delivery of childcare services.
