HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE

For many years, Tangentyere Design has been involved in providing architectural services for a variety of health related projects.

In 1993 the practice assisted the Central Australian Aboriginal Alcohol Programs Unit with the development of facilities in Alice Springs. Through an extensive consultation process with the management committee, staff and clients, Tangentyere Design prepared a brief and design for a culturally appropriate alcohol programs facility based on a holistic approach to treatment. The design responded to very tight budget constraints with the innovative use of transportable buildings arranged around courtyards and a “healing pit”.

In 1998 Tangentyere Design was engaged under an Indigenous Housing Authority NT funding program to undertake a special study to identify the accommodation needs of Aboriginal renal patients, particularly dialysis recipients, on the Alice Springs Town Camps. A number of existing Town Camp buildings were converted to provide appropriate living environments for renal patients.

2006 saw the practice involved in the South Barkly Community Kitchens project, a health and nutrition “Grow Well” program run by Anyinginyi Health Aboriginal Corporation in Tennant Creek, and funded by the Office of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health. The project involved community consultation, design, documentation and project management of the conversion of four existing community buildings to commercial grade kitchens. The kitchens project was completed in 2007.
